JOMC Avengers: The Many Roadmaps to Success was an event hosted by alumni to present Journalism and Mass Communications (JOMC) students with first-hand accounts of what life after North Carolina A&T State University is like.
JOMC Avengers was held at noon on Oct. 25, in Crosby Hall room 215. The event featured a panel of six JOMC alumni with different backgrounds, concentrations, and careers, with the intent of informing current undergraduates about dealing with life and challenges.
“You’re not always going to find satisfaction in your job, that’s not a good way to see success,” said Kyle Harvey, panelist, “You gotta find things that align with it because a job is what you need, a career is a privilege.”
The panel consisted of Sylvia Obell, Jasmine Gurley, Kyle Harvey, Joy Nichelle Randall, Alexis Wainwright, Ebony Jones, and was hosted by Miracle King. Panelists’ graduation dates ranged from 2003 to 2016; and all acknowledged using skills learned from their time at A&T in their ranging careers. The panelists answered student questions that ranged from race to lessons learned to having a voice.
“You guys have toys downstairs to play with and you’re gonna have a great resume and you’re gonna be shining,” King said, “but something may happen along the way, so you need someone to kind of hold your hand and give you some advice.”
This panel was one of those ways undergraduates could receive that advice.
The panelists were upfront with the audience, sharing multiple situations where they had to speak up. Situations like in Gurley’s case, a volunteer project “pulling weeds” at a Confederate museum or when Wainwright had to push to get a story about a racist act published that producers didn’t see an issue with. Panelists also spoke on their journeys, like Jones moving from music to sports or Randall becoming a make-up artist.
The JOMC Avengers: The Many Roadmaps to Success panel was an hour-long impartment of wisdom and experience from alumni to undergraduates. It was one of the many events held to welcome back alumni to A&T during Homecoming week. The panel showcased that the pride Crosby Kids have towards their department doesn’t decrease in the time after graduating, but evolves.
